Tinnitus — a persistent ringing, whining, or buzzing sound that isn’t coming from anything external — is extremely common, and one of the most accessible ways people manage it day-to-day is sound masking: introducing another sound that makes the internal one less noticeable.

Why masking works
Tinnitus tends to stand out most in quiet environments, where there’s nothing else competing for your attention. Adding a steady external sound — ideally one close to the pitch of the tinnitus itself — gives your brain something else to focus on, which is why background noise (a fan, a shower running) often makes tinnitus temporarily less noticeable without doing anything to the tinnitus itself.
Finding your tone
A generic white noise machine masks broadly, but a tone generator lets you get more specific:
- Start a single-frequency tone and adjust it up or down until it’s close to the pitch of the ringing you’re hearing.
- Keep the volume low — masking works by adding a comparable, not louder, sound. Cranking the volume defeats the purpose and risks further ear strain.
- Try nearby frequencies, not just one — tinnitus pitch is rarely a single exact number, so a close match is usually easier to find than an exact one.
It’s masking, not treatment
It’s worth being precise about what this actually does: a matched tone makes tinnitus less noticeable in the moment, the same way background noise does. It doesn’t reduce or cure tinnitus itself, and persistent or worsening tinnitus is worth mentioning to a doctor, particularly if it’s new, one-sided, or paired with hearing changes.
