If you’ve seen “binaural beats” recommended for focus or relaxation and wondered what they actually are, the mechanism is simpler than the mystique around it suggests.
The actual mechanism
You play two pure tones at slightly different frequencies — say, 200Hz in your left ear and 210Hz in your right ear, through headphones. Each ear only hears its own single tone; there’s no “beat” in the audio signal itself. The 10Hz difference is instead perceived inside your brain, as the two signals are combined — a subtle pulsing sensation rather than an audible waveform.
This only works with headphones or earbuds where each ear genuinely receives a different signal — playing both tones through a single shared speaker won’t produce the effect, since both ears would hear the same combined sound instead of two separate ones.
How to try it
- Put on headphones (required — see above).
- Pick a base frequency (a common starting point is somewhere in the 100-300Hz range) and a small difference between the two ears, often 4-10Hz.
- Let it play for at least several minutes — the effect is subtle, not an instant “aha.”
What to actually expect
Binaural beats are popular for relaxation and focus, and plenty of people find them genuinely useful as a low-effort ambient tool — similar to how some people find white noise or ambient music helpful for concentration. That said, it’s worth being realistic: the research on binaural beats producing specific, reliable cognitive effects is mixed, not settled. Treat it as a pleasant, easy-to-try relaxation aid rather than a guaranteed brain hack.
